The Tahoe Hybrid: Size AND Economy

Considering downsizing the size of your vehicle to save on soaring fuel costs? Worried about how to squeeze in those five kids you need to lug to soccer practice every week? Does the sight of a wimpy small sedan fill you with consternation but does the sight of gas prices at $4.00 a gallon fill you with absolute terror? Then perhaps the all new 2008 Tahoe Hybrid will cure what ails you! Available in both 2WD and 4WD, it is comparable with the existing Tahoe in terms of seating, cargo capacity, and price range.

The Tahoe Hybrid’s fuel conserving technology includes its 6.0L Vortec V8 engine with Active Fuel Management. It has Late Intake Valve closing for additional fuel savings with Variable Valve Timing and 10.8:1 compression ratio. Even with this high compression rate, the Tahoe Hybrid can run on regular unleaded fuel. The Tahoe Hybrid’s patented technology, the world’s first 2-mode (two motors, both generating 60kW of electricity) hybrid propulsion system, optimizes fuel economy for various driving conditions. The first mode, used at low speeds with light loads, enables the vehicle to operate in three ways: 1) electric power only, 2) engine power only, and 3) combination of electric and engine power. The second mode is used primarily at highway speeds, full engine power is used when necessary such as passing, towing a trailer, and climbing steep grades. The Tahoe Hybrid also recharges itself through regenerative braking. About 30% of its battery power is regenerated through regenerating braking, but be sure to not brake too hard! Just let off the gas and ease down for regeneration to occur.

The exterior has also been redesigned for aerodynamic improvements. It has a sleeker aluminum hood, grille and front fascia with a lower air dam, 18” wheels, assist steps, rear spats, a new rear spoiler, D-pillar moldings, tail lamps, rear fascia and an aluminum liftgate with fixed lift glass.

The Tahoe Hybrid’s safety components also exceed what you would normally find in a conventional Tahoe. It has a unique crash sensor for high-voltage content, a 300V battery protected by a box which encases it as well as the vehicle structure, a high-voltage system that shuts down automatically when the air bags deploy, and access protection, which shuts down the high-voltage system if any safety cover with integral switches is removed.

So cram in all of your kids, pets, and toys! The 2WD supports a payload of 1830 lbs and the 4WD model 1773 lbs. With 332 horsepower, a torque of 367 at 4100 rpm, and towing capacities of 6200 lbs (2WD) and 6000 lbs (4WD), you’ll forget that you’re driving something that uses so little gasoline! Three hundred gallons less per year than the competition, in fact!

The American Dream

The Chevy Corvette is one of the fastest cars ever built, with brutal acceleration that will keep pace with the fastest exotic cars on the planet. It continues Chevy Corvette’s tradition of building hyper supercars that also behave like civilized automobiles when needed. 430 horsepower and over 400 lb/ft of torque are just the tip of a throttle away, coming from the american-built 6.2L V8 engine. 0 – 60 rushes by in four point one seconds – this is a car that will run with the fastest exotics on the planet, and do it in comfort. It will run hot laps around a race track or in the mountains all day long, and then smoothly take you to a dinner engagement in the city.

It has the suspension, brakes and transmission of a supercar as well. It not only rockets forward, but will will brake with such force that you are thrown forward into your seat belt. And the racing suspension gives the car effortless poise and seemingly endless grip through the twisties. The immense power and taut suspension make for an intoxicating driving experience that rivals most sports cars.

But with the push of a button it will ride with buttery smoothness and behave like a docile sedan. It looks aggressive and mean, sitting on 18 inch wheels up front and 19 inches in the back sitting on Good Year F1 rubber ,with a low factory suspension. The interior is more luxurious as well, with an available carbon fiber trim, and deeply bucketed black leather seats.

A Corvette is simply gorgeous and is built at the highest standards,it is a car you would be proud to call your baby.

Active Fuel Management

Active Fuel Management is a new innovation to help you save gas! This is how it works. With Active Fuel Management technology from GM, the Vortec 5.3L V8 and 6.0L engines in half-ton models deliver power only when you need it.  In situations where extra power is not needed, such as cruising down the highway on level roads, Active Fuel Management shuts down four of the eight cylinders, which in turn saves you gas. When more power is need, the cylinders start back up immediately. This exciting new technology is available in most Tahoes, Silverados, Suburbans, and Avalanches.

Some Like It Fast

The all new 2009 Corvette ZR-1

The engine is based on a modified LS3 6.2-liter block and is expected to produce 100 horsepower/liter. Because tweaks are still being made to the cooling system, final testing won’t happen for months. (SAE procedures require a 0-to-60 test be run in a car with instruments measuring intake air temperatures at 60 mph so that air can be supplied at precisely the same temperature during the dyno test.) Expect 620-plus horses and around 600 pound feet.

Because blowers add weight, extensive lightening efforts were concentrated in front. The fenders, hood inner and outer panels, roof panel, and C-pillar roof bar are carbon fiber, the tooling for which caps production at 2000 per year. The fibers are visible on the roof and hood inner, and to prevent ultraviolet light from degrading them a special additive costing over $60,000/gallon (!) is added at three-percent concentration in the thin clear-coat layer ($2000/gallon). In all, the new car is expected to weigh about 200 pounds more than a Z06 and to nudge the weight bias forward slightly to 52/48 front/rear.

Major developments in the chassis department include Brembo calipers grabbing gigantic carbon-ceramic rotors designed for Ferrari’s Enzo and FXX. (At an expected price of near $100,000, the ZR1 will be the least expensive car with standard CCM brakes.) We’re assured the brakes work perfectly well when cold, and they don’t squeal. Delphi reengineered its magneto-rheological shocks to withstand the extreme temperatures encountered in track duty, allowing the ZR1 to ride like a base coupe and outhandle the Z51 and Z06.

Will it all work? The ZR1 is undergoing GM’s full battery of passenger-car durability tests as well as its motorsport torture regimen (250 miles of autocrossing and a 24-hour endurance race), so it should hold up fine. The hardware and numbers sound impressive and we’re rooting for the home team, but can a car with a front weight bias really smoke a GT3 or F430 Scuderia around the ‘Ring? Let’s put it this way, we will be getting many trade-ins. The BOSS is here, everybody, back to the garage.

Hybrid Tahoe

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid looks nothing like the NASA space shuttle, yet it’s a similar leap into the future, and a similar collaboration among a bunch of science guys made it happen.

This full-size SUV can still haul seven or eight passengers plus cargo, and tow up to 6,000 pounds. Yet the only different thing you’ll notice about driving it, is the number of fuel stations you can pass by without feeling the need to top off the gas tank. Two-mode hybrids aren’t exactly new. GM has had the two-mode hybrid system working in transit buses since 2003. Today, about 700 of those buses are operating in 60 cities in North America and have just been introduced in Europe.

But the Tahoe represents the technology’s first application to a personal-size vehicle. The two-mode hybrid is a complex integration of electric motors, high-performance electronics, wiring, energy management and hybrid-system control units. As a result, GM had a devil of a time trying to help us understand why this two-mode hybrid technology is better than existing hybrids. A hybrid powertrain requires more airflow for cooling, so the front grille and front airdam have been suitably modified. Meanwhile the front fascia, running boards and rear spoiler have been reconfigured for a more slippery aerodynamic profil. As a result, the Tahoe Hybrid now has a 0.34 Cd (coefficient drag) , compared to the conventional version’s 0.39 Cd.Since the new hybrid powertrain adds about 400 pounds to the Tahoe’s curb weight, there are a number of useful measures to reduce the vehicle’s weight. The hood and rear liftgate are now aluminum. The front bucket seats are thinner, though they turn out to be just as comfortable and improve rear-seat legroom by a fraction. Look at some we have in stock.

So that’s why Chevy is an American Revolution.

Those Little Green Caps

You may have noticed the bright green tire caps on other peoples cars and wondered where you could find some. Green tire caps indicate the tires are filled with nitrogen. The air we breathe, and what normally goes into our tires, is composed of approximately 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Because nitrogen molecules are larger and more substantial than oxygen molecules the leakage rate is 3 to 4 times lower when nitrogen is used.

Nitrogen is a safe, dry, non-flammable, non-corrosive gas. The US Military, Boeing, NASA, Indy Car, and NASCAR have been filling their tires with nitrogen for years, but it is now available for consumers. Nitrogen-inflated tires can significantly increase a vehicle’s performance by improving steering, reducing the chance of blowouts, improving handling, and improving braking. Nitrogen-filled tires can also improve fuel economy, extend tire life, and reduce oxidation in your tires. Nitrogen helps the environment by improving overall fuel efficiency, which results in a reduction in harmful toxic emissions.

Every vehicle at Singh Chevrolet has had its tires filled with nitrogen so that our customers can enjoy the benefits. When you buy our nitrogen package you get free refills for the life of your vehicle, even if you change out your tires.  Your tires will sport the little green caps, which show are invested in maximizing safety, performance, and the air we breathe.
